OKTA Identity and Access

Coast Colleges has recently partnered with Okta, the world's leading identity and access management solution, to provide an easy, consistent, and secure login experience to a multitude of online applications and services.

Whether you're a student, faculty, or staff member at any Coast college, you undoubtedly use numerous web applications like Canvas, Microsoft Office, or Banner on a regular basis. Since each of these applications require a password, the number of passwords that we're responsible for is also growing, making them difficult to manage safely. Okta addresses this problem by bringing all your applications together in one place and giving you instant access with one secure login.

Current OKTA Issues:

As previously announced, the Coast District (CCC, GWC, OCC) has replaced our current single sign-on solution (“PGSSO”) with a new system (“OKTA”) for signing into (most) Coast systems and other District online systems.
The Information Services department is receiving and handling a large number of inquiries regarding the new OKTA single sign-on process. We wanted to send this communication to each of you in an attempt to clarify and address the most common issues/questions we are receiving:

For more information, please read the OKTA FAQ document.

  • OKTA does not currently accept a full Coast email address as a login username. The username to be used with OKTA should be, as an example, Jsmithers23. Not Jsmithers23@gwc.cccd.edu.

  • OKTA does not automatically send you a Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) code via SMS text. There is a button/link that says “Send Code” that must be clicked on to send users the 2FA code. This is confusing a large number of users as the previous (“PGSSO”) solution was automatic and users are expecting it to be the same. Our recommended solution is to install and use the OKTA Verify mobile app. Doing so will present an option to “push” 2FA request automatically, simplifying the login process.

  • OKTA will not send an SMS text message to international (or non-US) phone numbers for 2FA. Our recommended solution is to install and use the OKTA Verify mobile app which will allow for 2FA on international phone numbers.

  • We strongly recommend installing and using the OKTA Verify mobile application to simplify the 2FA login process and provide improved security over SMS texts.

We hope that this information is helpful and recommend that this email be shared with anyone who may be experiencing issues.

Thank you for your continued support while we work to resolve these issues.
