Microsoft’s Identity and Access provides a unified security solution with multifactor identity verification that can be trusted.

Our recommendations on how to best setup Single Sign-On with Microsoft Entra has changed since the above video was created. It is now highly recommended to setup SMS text messaging as your first authentication method and then proceed to setup the Microsoft Authenticator app. Thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. What are the password requirements?
    The password should contain at least 12 characters and contain characters from three of the following categories:
    • Uppercase letters (A through Z)
    • Lowercase letters (a through z)
    • Base 10 digits (0 through 9)
    • Non-alphanumeric characters (special characters): (~!@#$%^&*_-+=`|\(){}[]:;"'><,.?/)
      (Currency symbols such as the Euro or British Pound aren't counted as special characters for this policy setting.)

    The password should not contain:
    • Any part of your name or email.
    • Common words (i.e., school, campus, spring, summer, fall, 2021, 2022) that are often found in passwords.
    • Any password you have used before.

    * Passwords can only be changed once every 24 hours.

  2. Why do I receive the following message when trying to log in? "This username may be incorrect."
    Answer - Make sure you typed it correctly and you have included any numbers in your username. Otherwise, contact the IT Service Desk for assistance (714) 438 – 8111.
    It’s also possible your account is not active yet. Please wait and try to login at least 5 hours after receiving your acceptance letter. If the problem continues, contact the IT Service Desk.

  3. What multifactor identity verification methods can I use to with my account?
    Answer - Mobile authentication app, SMS Text Messaging, or Phone call

  4. I’m entering the correct email address and password, but I keep receiving the following message. “Password is incorrect”
    Answer – Ensure the Caps Lock is not enabled. If you continue to receive error messages, try to reset your password via self-service by clicking on PASSWORD RESET*. Contact the IT Service Desk for assistance (714) 438 – 8111 if this issue continues.

  5. How do I unlock my account after several unsuccessful attempts to login?
    Answer - If your account indicates that it’s locked, you can wait approximately 20 minutes and try again or reach out to our IT Service Desk for assistance (714) 438 – 8111. However, if the reason for the lockout is you forgotten your password, then you can attempt to change the password yourself by clicking on this link PASSWORD RESET*.

  6. How can I simplify the two-factor authentication login process?
    Answer – You can consider using an app, Microsoft Authenticator (preferred) or Google Authenticator, which are available from their respective stores. You can also use Apple’s built-in authenticator tool; however, the most secure solution is to use a separate app.


  7. How do I change my phone number for SMS Text Messaging?
    Answer – – Follow the steps below to change your phone number:
    1. Sign in with your Microsoft account.
    2. Select your avatar in the top right, then select View account.
    3. Under Security info select Update info.
    4. Click “Change” next to the current phone number and follow the instructions.


  8. I received an acceptance letter from my college. Why can’t I log in?
    Answer - It is possible the letter you received may have been sent out prior to the account being ready to use.
    Otherwise:
    • If you are a RETURNING STUDENT, please try using your old/prior password.
    • If you are a NEW STUDENT, you may have to wait up to 5 hours for the process to complete.
      NOTE: If you received your letter more than 5 hours ago and still unable to log in, please contact our IT Service Desk for assistance (714) 438 – 8111
    • You may also try a password reset. To reset the password, click PASSWORD RESET* and follow the instructions.
      NOTE: If your account is not ready, the password reset will not work.


  9. How do I change my Multi-Factor Authentication method?
    Answer - In order to change your MFA, you will need to log into your Microsoft account.
    1. Sign in with your Microsoft account.
    2. Select your avatar in the top right, then select View account.
    3. Under Security info select Update info.
    4. Click on “+ Add sign-in method” to add a new MFA method. Follow the instructions.
